“You are not stuck where you are…. unless you decide to be” – Wayne Dyer

Kavyata’s mid-career-change workshop called Urja – Energy for Inner Agility is designed exclusively for mid-senior executives and professionals looking to take their careers in a new direction. Perhaps you’re looking for a whole new challenge professionally. Or your organization may want you to reinvent yourself in a new way. Whether you move laterally or in a new direction, you want to do something which helps you get unstuck, makes you feel alive and energized to grow.

URJA is a 3 day inspirational journey of self-discovery, cognitive and emotional flexibility, based on brain, human and social sciences. It enables mid-career individuals to take meaningful decisions and choices about their careers.

Why do mid-career professionals need ‘URJA – Energy for Inner Agility & Change’?

Mid-career is that time when you want more than just success from your career – you want to make an impact, use your talents to the fullest and do work which makes you feel fulfilled and accomplished.

But mid-career is also the time when professionals need to reinvent themselves the most. Mid-career change is not just about changing careers/jobs, it is about changing your relationship with work and self to move towards a place where you thoughtfully construct your career in a way which brings together your highest strengths, your unused potential and your aspirations in a well-fitting and realistic way.

For organizations too, when executives reach the mid-senior level, there is an expectation that they will transition to a new way of leading themselves and the organization, which allows them to maximise personal and business impact. Organizations which are affected by the rapid changes in the external environment, need their mid-senior people to show flexibility and responsiveness and get prepared to lead the business into new areas.  However, this is not easy, because very often the same behaviours which make professionals successful in the early part of their careers, hold them back from making an impact at the next level. This costs not only the individuals, but also the organizations which have nurtured such talent.

Mid-career change comes from developing inner agility – mindsets and practices which allow mid-career individuals to lead in new ways, learn and reinvent and cope with the emotional and cognitive burden of change.

Often though, the emotional and cognitive flexibility to respond to change is overlooked or taken for granted, resulting in falling back upon old habits and causing people and organizational breakdowns/stalemates.

Urja is about developing inner agility & change readiness – articulating personal response to change and uncertainty, thereby releasing energy and creating clarity for mid-career individuals to respond to change and complexity with a sense of purpose and to take new actions for impact.

Urja is meant for:

  • Mid-career professionals with 10 years plus of experience, who are expected to lead people, drive innovation and transform cultures. At this stage, mid-career individuals grapple with several issues which can keep them stuck at lower than maximum performance. The first is that, very often behaviours which make them successful in the early part of their careers, such as driving hard for individual performance, may not be relevant for the next stage of their careers, where they need to lead differently. Also, this is the stage where they have to be able to see the larger picture for the organization as a whole, but this depends in great measure on them being able to grow out of a narrow, functional mindset. Mid-career is also the time when the the spillover of life-stage transitions onto energy and hence performance at work, is significant. It can only be ignored at the cost of sacrificing productivity and results.
  • Mid-career individuals who want to invest in their personal growth, reinvent and energize themselves to act on their hidden and unknown potential. It is also meant for mid-career change – when individuals want to transition into something more meaningful or may want to achieve clarity whether they want a career change or a job change or just need an inspiring and safe space to reexamine their choices and direction.

How does Urja energize you for mid-career change?

Urja expands energy and agility for mid-career change

Through immersive experiences, self and peer reflection, dialogue, use of framing concepts, participants learn 3 essential practices which help them expand inner agility and make them ready for mid-career change

  • Pause and reflect, embrace openness to ‘not know’ : A lot of the ‘stuck’ feeling arises from not being sure of what to do next and not knowing how to respond in a different way to the changes outside. But these stuck feelings are often denied, and as a result a lot of energy is blocked. At the Urja workshop, mid-career change participants learn how to pause and reflect on what they need from their careers and lives, accept and work with the feeling of ‘not knowing’ and move to seek answers which can give them energy and new possibilities

  • Look for solutions across the network and the ecosystem : A second powerful practice which Urja participants learn is to widen their understanding of their network and ecosystem – so that they can seek help and ideas from new sources instead of feeling stuck.

  • Test solutions and their own responses, through quick experimentation: Participants also learn how to construct quick experiments to test their way forward with mid-career change; whether it’s about starting new side projects while working full time or even for mid-senior professionals to test out new ways of behaving/leading their people/trying out new initiatives at work

How do Organizations benefit from developing mid-career professionals?

By increasing their own energy and agility, mid-senior leaders in an organization impact the organization in many ways:

  • Purpose Led Change : Ability to create and establish principles of change (for self and for team that one leads)
  • Simplicity : Ability to create simple processes, systems and structures which support nimbleness
  • Responsiveness : Greater responsiveness to stakeholders (customers, team, ecosystem partners)
  • Insights: Ability to sense and derive insights which lie at the boundaries of functions, domains, human-technology capabilities

How does Urja help people with mid-career change?

  • Clear personal response to change and complexity
  • Understanding of how to rewire old habits
  • New practices to lead their teams and engage with ecosystem partners
  • Deep peer relationships with cohort members, that sustain post program

methodology of urja

3 day residential program

Day 1: 11.00 a.m to 6 p.m. – Participants map their professional and personal journeys – identifying significant patterns, drivers and influences. These patterns, drivers are important to surface in order to understand what may be shaping the current response to change. Structured exercises, dialogue and reflection are used.

Day 2: 9.30 a.m to 6 p.m – An exploration and understanding of how these patterns, drivers may be shaping the current responses at work, in the light of expectations to lead, transform, innovate, grow business/change professional direction etc is facilitated through activities, psychometric tools, reflection, group feedback etc.

We also work on clarifying own aspirations and surfacing unexplored potentials – looking at how these can energize one to take new steps, explore new choices and decisions.

Day 3: 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Understanding what happens in the mid-career stage and how one can make space for new behaviours, choices. Committing to a set of practices (for each individual) which can sustain and grow energy and drive to implement new choices and actions.

The program offers ample time for individual and shared reflection as well as time to experience the natural environment. These form an essential part of the Urja experience of pausing in order to move faster.
